Archbishop Holgate Hospital, Hemsworth

Welcome to Archbishop

Holgate

Hospital

Over 450 years experience of accommodating, supporting and caring for older people from the local area who are in need.

Welcome to Archbishop Holgate Hospital Hemsworth, providing almshouses for older, (Over 60 years) vulnerable local people who are in need, and local young people needing financial assistance for their education.

Located in beautiful West Yorkshire countryside, on the edge of the small village of South Heindley near Hemsworth, our accommodation and community are designed to provide a comfortable and safe environment with a Christian ethos.

We are not a hospital as we understand it today. Our word hospital comes from the Latin ‘hospes’ meaning both host and guest. The word reflects our Christian duty to shelter those in need. An obligation we continue to fulfil today as a result of the generous bequest of our benefactor and founder.

A Caring Community

 Archbishop Holgate Hospital

At Archbishop Holgate Hospital, Hemsworth we understand that as people move into their later years and into retirement they can become isolated and daunted by the challenges which this time of life presents. Personal financial and social support, while they are still physically fit, is uppermost in their needs.

We are proud to offer to members of our local parishes, who have no-one else to turn to, accommodation in modernised self-contained cottages. The hospital consists of 24 almshouses, a chapel, community hall and ancillary buildings.

Established in the 16th Century by a philanthropist Archbishop of York, to provide a place of warmth, safety and sanctuary to those in need. This almshouse model community was instituted as a direct instruction of the last will and testament of Robert Holgate,

‘…two years after my decease found erect or make or cause to be founded erected made and incorporated one hospital of one Master and Twenty Brethren & Sisters in Hemsworth in the said county of York to continue for ever,’

Today’s community has at its heart the Christian gospel to love one another just as I have loved you, and the passage from the Book of Proverbs One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord,And He will repay him for his good deed. The Hospital continues to support those in need from the locality, spiritually, educationally and through its accommodation as directed by Archbishop Robert Holgate.
