VJ Day 80 – We Will Remember Them
Earlier this year, in May, our Hospital Community came together to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
On the 15 August, we honoured the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) — the day in 1945 when hostilities in the Pacific ended, following the Japanese surrender.
Although the closure of Ebor Hall meant a scaled-back commemoration, in true wartime spirit Staff, Residents, and Volunteers gathered at 9am by the Old Porters Lodge for a flag raising and reflection.
The community then processed to Holy Cross Chapel for a Mass of Thanksgiving, Commemoration, and Peace.
At midday we joined the National two-minute silence to mark VJ Day 80 for those
– who never came home
– who returned wounded or scarred
– whose lives were forever changed by war
we paused to remember their sacrifice.
