“Journey through York Minster – Spirituality, Faith and Heritage”

As part of the celebrations marking the 470th anniversary of Archbishop Robert Holgate’s bequest, members of the Hospital community came together for a special pilgrimage to York.

The pilgrimage began with Holy Mass in Holy Cross Chapel, providing an opportunity for everyone to gather in prayer before setting out on the journey. Beginning the day in worship was an important part of the pilgrimage, reminding us that this was much more than simply a visit to York. It was a shared spiritual journey, bringing the Hospital community together in faith, friendship and fellowship. 

The opening Mass also provided an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable life and legacy of Archbishop Robert Holgate. In 1545, Robert Holgate was appointed Archbishop of York, a position he held during an important period of change and reform in the Church. Ten years later, in 1555, his bequest founded the Hospital, establishing the foundations of the community that continues today..

As the pilgrims travelled to York, there was an opportunity to reflect on the Hospital’s long history and on the vision that has sustained its work for more than four centuries. The pilgrimage provided a particularly meaningful way to mark this significant anniversary, connecting our present community with those who have gone before us.

The group visited York Minster, the heart of the Diocese and Province of York, providing a fitting destination for this special anniversary pilgrimage. The day offered time for prayer, reflection and fellowship, as well as an opportunity to celebrate the enduring connection between Archbishop Holgate, the Hospital and the wider Church in York.

The pilgrimage was a memorable part of our 470th anniversary celebrations, giving us an opportunity to give thanks for the past, celebrate the community we share today and look with hope towards the future.
