On a bright and sunny day at the end of April , a spirit of peace, reflection, and quiet encouragement filled the grounds of Archbishop Holgate Hospital as guests gathered for the recent “Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times” Quiet Day.
Set within the Hospital tranquil rural surroundings, the day invited participants to step away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life and spend time reflecting on biblical wisdom and its relevance for modern living. Through prayer, silence, conversation, and guided reflection, attendees were encouraged to rediscover hope, strength, and spiritual renewal.
The Quiet Day was led by Canon Emeritus Fred Kershaw, from Good News for Everyone (formerly The Gideons) and retired Director of Education for the Diocese of Blackburn, whose thoughtful and engaging reflections helped create an atmosphere of calm openness throughout the day. Drawing on scripture and personal insight, he encouraged participants to consider how ancient biblical passages continue to speak powerfully into contemporary life.
The key addresses for the day centred on the words of Psalm 31 and the bibicsl text which anchored the day verse 24:
“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”
This passage and the theme for the day resonated deeply with those attending, many of whom described the experience as uplifting, restorative, and deeply moving.— Founded in 1555 through the vision and generosity of Archbishop Robert Holgate, Archbishop Holgate Hospital continues its long-standing tradition of nurturing body, mind, and spirit. Often described as a “Place of Sanctuary,” the historic setting provided the perfect environment for contemplation and renewal during this special event, held as part of the hospital’s 470th anniversary celebrations
Participants spoke warmly of both the peaceful atmosphere and the sense of welcome they experienced throughout the day.
One attendee commented:
“A wonderful day in the most beautiful setting. Thank you for a truly peace-filled time.”
Another shared:
“I had never been on one before — wow — book me in for next year!”
The overwhelmingly positive responses reflected the growing desire for opportunities to pause, reflect, and reconnect spiritually in an increasingly busy world,
Organisers expressed their gratitude to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a meaningful occasion, especially to the Leader for the day, Canon Emeritus Fred Kershaw. With many attendees already hoping for future Quiet Days, the event proved a fitting and memorable part of the ongoing anniversary celebrations at Archbishop Holgate Hospital.
