Our Accommodation and Guest Accommodation
This Almshouse community consists of 24 historic cottages offering a gentle lifestyle amid a rural setting. We have operated at our existing site in Hemsworth, since 1860’s. A unique place, with a sense of history and stepping back in time.
In a beautiful idyllic setting, the cottages are arranged in a quadrangle, with Holy Cross Chapel at the centre of the community. The cottages, enjoy fabulous views, and there are many beautiful walks to enjoy in the surrounding countryside.
Architecturally distinctive with unique features, The Hospital was designed by Robert Phillip Pope (RA), known as one of the Victorian Arts and Crafts architects, and provides a restful base for our ‘Brothers and Sisters’ seeking to live out their twilight years .
In recent years, the Trustees have undertaken, extensions and upgrading of the cottages within the parameters of the grade 2 listed building status. These refurbishments have ensured that our supported independent cottages offer modern living facilities, a kitchen, living room, one bedroom, a shower room and outhouse store. There is an area for each cottage to the rear as well as a small border in front of each dwelling offering tranquillity and neighbourly conversation.
In Autumn 2023 a single occupancy guest cottage was furnished. The vision for this guest accommodation was fourfold:
• to provide emergency accommodation for relatives
• to enable those seeking to join the community to spend time and experience the community prior to making a final decision
• to offer those relatives, who live a significant distance from the community, short stay accommodation
• to offer local clergy a place of retreat
